The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has recently released a comprehensive code of conduct ahead of the upcoming Senate elections, with a primary focus on ensuring transparency, integrity, and fairness throughout the electoral process.
This code of conduct entails stringent guidelines that political parties and candidates must adhere to during their participation in the elections. Notably, one crucial provision prohibits parties and candidates from making statements that undermine the ideology of Pakistan or its integrity.
Additionally, any derogatory remarks aimed at the armed forces, parliament, or judiciary are strictly prohibited.
Moreover, political entities and candidates are urged to avoid making the Election Commission of Pakistan controversial in any manner. Engagement in corrupt or illegal activities is strictly forbidden, alongside the prohibition of public office holders from exerting influence on the election’s outcome.
Government employees are reminded to maintain impartiality and refrain from favoring or opposing any candidate during the electoral process. Furthermore, to uphold the sanctity of the elections, the participation of the president and provincial governors in election campaigns for the Senate is barred.
The code of conduct extends its regulations to voters as well, prohibiting the use of mobile phones inside polling stations to prevent potential interference or disruption.
Financial regulations are also outlined in the code, imposing a cap of Rs1.5 million on election expenses for each candidate.
Successful candidates must submit their election expenses to the returning officer within five days, and all candidates are required to open bank accounts for election-related expenses before submitting any documents.
