KARACHI/ISLAMABAD: The International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, will help Ugandan authorities to establish a Halal Authentication Laboratory in the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU).
The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) is set to support this project financially. Pakistani experts belonging to the Halal Certification, Testing and Research Services (HCTRS), working under the HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, will set up the laboratory in the Islamic University in Uganda, and provide complete technical assistance to Ugandan scholars.
This was discussed in a recent meeting held at the HEJ Research Institute, presided over by Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen, the Director of the ICCBS, University of Karachi. The Director congratulated Prof. Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf and Dr. Shakil Ahmed for having a successful visit to the Islamic University in Uganda.
Senior officials, including Prof. Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf, Dr. Shakil Ahmed, and Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmed, the SFDL Incharge Director, attended the meeting.
Prof. Musharraf, who is one of the project coordinators, told the meeting about the details of his visit and said that he and Dr. Shakil Ahmed, representing the ICCBS, University of Karachi, attended the start-up meeting of the reverse linkage project between Uganda and Pakistan on establishing the Halal Authentication Laboratory held between Pakistani and Ugandan experts in Uganda.
The IUIU Rector Prof. Dr. Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda chaired the meeting, held to set the detailed implementation arrangements of the project.
Taking into view the past performance of the ICCBS Halal experts, the Islamic Development Bank agreed to provide financial support to this project, Prof. Musharraf. It is pertinent to mention that Prof. Dr. Syed Ghulam Musharraf is the only Pakistan Halal expert who, along with his team members established the Halal testing laboratory in 2020 in Kuwait.
In the end, Prof. Farzana Shaheen also inquired about the performance of the Halal Certification, Testing, and Research Services, University of Karachi. She pointed out, “The HCTRS must be committed to the ideal of quality and excellence in laboratory operations as this is the only facility for Halal services in the public sector research institution.”
