On April 2, Senate elections will take place for the 48 vacant seats. Candidates have until March 27 to withdraw their nomination papers.
Recently, a preliminary list of candidates for Balochistan has been released. As the Senate elections approach, the examination of nomination papers for these 48 upper house parliament positions will be conducted on March 19.
To address the vacancies, Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) has scheduled Senate elections on April 2nd. The updated candidate list will be released on the 26th of this month, and nomination withdrawals are allowed until March 27th. In the federal capital, National Assembly members will vote for Senate representatives in one general seat and one technocrat/Ulema seat.
Meanwhile, provincial assembly members will elect senators for seven general seats, two women seats, two technocrat/Ulema seats, and one non-Muslim seat each from Punjab and Sindh. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 42 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the Senate election.
As stated by ECP KP chapter spokesperson Sohail Ahmad, a list has been released, indicating that 25 candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the seven available general seats.
Furthermore, ten candidates have submitted their nomination papers for the two technocrat and Ulema seats in the province. Additionally, seven female candidates have put forth their nomination papers for the two reserved seats for women in KP.
Simultaneously, the Balochistan Election Commission disclosed the initial lineup of contenders for the province’s open positions in the upper legislative chamber. As per a representative from the local electoral body, 38 candidates’ nomination forms have been validated, competing for the 11 available seats in the Senate representing Balochistan.
In the available seats, there are 7 general positions, 2 designated for technocrats, and 2 reserved for women. The spokesperson continued, sharing that 17 applicants’ nomination papers were accepted for the Senate’s 7 general seats. For the 2 technocrat seats, 13 candidates’ nomination papers were approved, and 8 candidates’ nomination papers were accepted for the 2 positions allocated to women, as per the official’s statement.
