Dead Chicken Meat Found in Shawarma, Raises Food Safety Concerns

Shawarma

LAHORE: In a startling revelation, it has come to light that dead chicken meat is being used in food products, notably in Shawarma, in Lahore.

During an episode of programme Sham-e-Ramzan, Punjab Food Authority Director General Muhammad Asim Javed disclosed that 80 kilograms of expired meat were confiscated from a market in Lahore over the past two days as part of ongoing operations.

Javed further revealed that on Sunday alone, a joint operation conducted by the Punjab Food Authority and Food Department led to the seizure of 2500 kilograms of expired meat from a prominent meat market near Mughulpura.

Describing the situation as grave, he emphasized that both dead animal meat and meat reaching its full expiration date had been confiscated.

Highlighting the extent of the issue, Javed claimed that during the first Ramadan, the Punjab Food Authority seized 1,000 kilograms of beef sourced from deceased animals.

Over the past two months, the Punjab Food Authority has conducted approximately 1800 raids, resulting in the confiscation of around 20,000 kilograms of expired or dead chicken meat.

Additionally, in the preceding two and a half months, a staggering 70,000 kilograms of expired or dead animal meat were seized.

Javed emphasized that meat safety teams, comprising veterinary doctors and food safety officers, regularly conduct operations and surveys in markets to ensure the provision of hygienic meat to the public.

The revelations have sparked concerns about food safety and hygiene standards in Lahore, prompting calls for stricter enforcement measures and heightened vigilance to prevent the consumption of unhygienic and potentially harmful food products.

Such incidents underscore the importance of robust regulatory frameworks and stringent oversight to safeguard public health and well-being.
