ISLAMABAD: According to sources, Omar Ayub Khan, supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and affiliated with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), is poised to assume the role of the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly of the country.
It has been disclosed that the Sunni Ittehad Council has resolved to appoint its own opposition leader in the lower house of Parliament. If elected to this position, Omar Ayub Khan would be serving as the leader of the opposition for the third time.
In a historic turn of events on Sunday, Shehbaz Sharif, the president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), secured the position of the 24th Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for the second consecutive term.
Shehbaz Sharif emerged victorious in the prime ministerial election, garnering 201 votes, while his PTI-backed opponent from the Sunni Ittehad Council, Omar Ayub Khan, secured 92 votes. The required majority to attain the office of prime minister was 169 votes.
Given the absence of a clear majority for any single party in the assembly, Shehbaz Sharif obtained the premiership with the support of PML-N’s allies, including PPPP, MQM-P, PML-Q, BAP, and others.
During today’s session, Omar Ayub Khan launched a strong criticism against the coalition government, labeling it a “fascist” regime solely focused on exploiting Pakistan’s resources with no clear ideology.
Addressing the assembly, Khan expressed grievances about perceived unfair electoral practices, stating, “We did not get the seats that we should’ve gotten, so the election of speaker, deputy speaker, and prime minister has become illegal.”
Referring to the coalition government members as “beneficiaries” of Form-47, Khan asserted that if the results were announced according to Form-45, the PTI would have secured 180 seats in the National Assembly.
Expressing dissatisfaction with media coverage, Khan remarked, “When PM-elect Shehbaz Sharif was speaking, the camera was on him, adding that his speech should also be covered live.”
Addressing the people of Pakistan, Khan conveyed that members of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and other parties present appeared defeated, suggesting that their faces indicated a sense of having a stolen mandate. He drew an analogy, stating, “When a thief is fleeing after stealing, there is fear on his face.”
