NDMA Issues Warning: Expect More Rain in the Next 48 Hours

More Rain

ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning of moderate to heavy rainfall in most parts of the country over the next 48 hours. This follows heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Karachi, where a subsequent cold wave gripped the city, bringing chilly weather.

Unfortunately, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa experienced tragic incidents, with 10 people losing their lives in roof collapses and mudslides caused by intermittent rains and snowfall.

The NDMA stated, “Most parts of the country are likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall, and isolated thunderstorms are expected with heavy snowfall in hilly areas in the next 48 hours.”

The western disturbance, which affected Balochistan and Sindh, has moved away, but the northern parts of the country, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper and central Punjab, are expected to face more rainfall, snow, isolated thunderstorms, and hailstorms.

The NDMA also forecasted another spell of rain from March 5 to 7, affecting Balochistan, KP, Kashmir, GB, and upper regions of Punjab, with possibilities of precipitation in northwestern Sindh. The authority issued an advisory for concerned authorities to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.

They emphasized the pre-placement of necessary equipment and fuel availability at vulnerable locations for backup generators in case of urban flooding.

In response to the weather conditions, municipal administrations have been directed to enhance solid waste management services to prevent blockages in sewerage and drainage systems during torrential rains. The NDMA urged passengers to exercise caution when traveling to hilly terrains.

The adverse weather, including heavy rain and snowfall, has disrupted daily life across the country, from Lahore to Balochistan, Karachi, and northern mountainous areas.

Tragic incidents have occurred, prompting authorities to declare a “rain emergency” in Karachi. The drainage system and rescue infrastructure in various areas have been severely affected, leading residents to relocate to safer places.
