Islamabad: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly’s scheduled session to administer the oath to newly elected members faced delays today due to disruptions caused by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers within the legislature.
Originally set to commence at 11 am, the session eventually began around 12:30 pm as lawmakers encountered obstacles entering the Assembly hall amid multiple PTI workers storming the floor.
During the tumult, PTI supporters reportedly hurled objects, including a “Lota” and a shoe, towards PML-N lawmaker Sobia Shahid from the visitors’ gallery while also chanting slogans against opposition female lawmakers.
Following the oath-taking of the new MPAs, nomination papers for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the assembly were open for submission until 5:00 pm on the same day.
In a notable update, the PTI opted to withdraw the nomination of Aqibullah, the brother of former speaker Assad Qaisar, and instead put forward Babar Saleem Swati, an MPA from Mansehra, as its candidate for the speaker’s position.
Ali Ameen Gandapur, PTI’s nominee for chief minister, voiced support for Babar Saleem Swati’s nomination, while Aqibullah is slated to be included as a minister in the provincial cabinet.
