Federal Cabinet Committee Approves Progress on Pak-Iran Gas Pipeline Project

Islamabad: in a momentous development, the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project has achieved significant progress following the approval granted by the Federal Cabinet Committee on Energy for the installation of gas pipelines within Pakistan.

Under the stewardship of caretaker Energy Minister Muhammad Ali, the Cabinet Energy Committee convened to deliberate on the crucial matter and greenlit the commencement of pipeline laying activities from Gwadar to the Iran border.

Led by the Interstate Gas System, the project seeks to bolster energy infrastructure and foster closer bilateral ties between Pakistan and Iran.

As per the post-meeting disclosure, Pakistan is slated to lay approximately 80 kilometers of pipeline within its territory, with completion anticipated within a year’s time frame.

The funding for this pivotal initiative will be drawn from the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess, ensuring financial feasibility and sustainability for the project.

Moreover, the Cabinet Committee reiterated its steadfast support for the recommendations forwarded by the Prime Minister’s Ministerial Committee, established in September 2023 to oversee the project’s trajectory and address any pertinent challenges along the way.

It is reported that the successful execution of this endeavor not only allows Pakistan to avert a substantial penalty of $18 billion but also promises to provide access to economical gas reserves, thereby enhancing the country’s energy security and stability.
