Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announces Ali Zafar as PTI’s new chairman nominee

Chairman Nominee

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announced Barrister Ali Zafar as the party’s next chairman nominee, addressing journalists outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after a meeting with party founder Imran Khan. The announcement comes amid a prolonged vacancy in the party’s top post for over a month.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had recently barred PTI from retaining its electoral symbol, citing irregularities in internal polls that did not adhere to the party’s constitution and election laws. Consequently, the party has been without top leadership positions.

Despite a temporary reprieve from the Peshawar High Court, the Supreme Court revoked PTI’s symbol in December, just two months before the February 8 general elections. This setback posed a significant challenge for the party in securing reserved seats, even after forming an alliance with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) post-elections.

Gohar Ali Khan revealed that fresh intra-party elections are scheduled for March 3, with Barrister Ali Zafar nominated for the position of party chairman and Omar Ayub as secretary-general. The announcement came after the party had initially planned intra-party polls on February 5 but later postponed them.

According to the PTI’s election schedule, candidates can submit their nomination papers on February 23 and 24, followed by scrutiny on February 25. The final decisions on nomination papers will be announced on February 27, and polling is set for March 3 at the party’s central office and provincial secretariats.

This development follows PTI’s recent collaboration with the SIC, aiming to secure its share of the 70 National Assembly reserved seats for women and minorities, allocated proportionally to political parties based on their performance in the general elections held on February 8.
