Exemplary Punishment
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar declared on Monday that the state of Pakistan will defend civil servants in the discharge of their constitutional duties. He emphasized the need to act against “violent trolls” and promised “exemplary punishment” for them.
This statement follows the recent confession by the Rawalpindi Commissioner, who admitted involvement in election result rigging and resigned, demanding punishment for his actions.
The Premier’s assurance to protect civil servants comes in response to the confession and allegations made by the former Rawalpindi Commissioner, who claimed that 13 candidates from Pindi were forcibly declared winners and accused of rigging the elections. Despite these allegations, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the newly-appointed Rawalpindi Commissioner have denied any wrongdoing.
Caretaker PM Kakar emphasized the commitment to noble civil servants serving the state and people of Pakistan, acknowledging the clear mandate given by the people on February 8. He highlighted the use of social media for blackmail and pressuring civil servants to switch loyalties, describing these actions as a violation of the constitution and laws of the land.
The disruption of services on the microblogging site ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) for the third consecutive day was also noted. The nationwide inaccessibility to the platform adds to the internet instability observed in the weeks surrounding the hotly-contested February 8 national elections.
The caretaker PM’s strong stance echoes concerns raised by PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz, who warned against threatening the bureaucracy and inciting lawbreaking. Maryam stated that such actions disrupt the state system and vowed legal action against those attempting to create chaos. She urged officers not to be intimidated and assured their security.
The ongoing challenges with social media access and the caretaker PM’s commitment to ensuring the security of civil servants underscore the complexities and tensions surrounding the recent elections and their aftermath.
