Kanwar Dilshad highlighted the potential for allocating National Assembly reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). As a former secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Dilshad suggested that the ECP may explore avenues to address the PTI’s petition, drawing on precedents of similar accommodations in the past.
Expressing optimism, Dilshad emphasized the importance of the ECP’s consideration of PTI’s request, particularly if the party submits a petition demonstrating an agreement with another political entity. He further suggested that the Supreme Court could arbitrate the matter in case of the ECP’s rejection.
Dilshad urged legal practitioners to transcend political affiliations and engage directly with the election commission. He noted instances where political parties had been granted relief previously and advocated for a similar approach in the current context.
Highlighting the PTI’s significant electoral success in Punjab, Dilshad asserted that PTI-supported candidates had secured a clear majority in the province, surpassing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in numbers to form the provincial government potentially. He also indicated the option for the PTI to establish an independent group should efforts to affiliate with another party prove unsuccessful.
