Vandalism
Karachi police have filed a terrorism case against PTI workers and leaders, accusing them of vandalism during an “unlawful assembly” at Teen Talwan in Clifton. The rally, called by Imran Khan, marked the party’s major gathering since violent protests erupted on May 9 following Imran’s arrest.
Over 20 PTI workers were arrested after clashes with the police, who claimed the party lacked a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the rally in the designated Red Zone. PTI countered, stating they had informed the district administration about the gathering, alleging discrimination in the exercise of their constitutional right compared to other parties.
South Deputy Inspector General of Police Syed Asad Raza revealed that a case had been lodged against PTI workers on behalf of the state, accusing 131 party members of instigating violence on social media. During the Teen Talwar rally, 66 PTI leaders, including Khurram Sher Zaman and Faheem Khan, allegedly incited around 5,000 workers. The clash resulted in 15 workers being arrested on the spot.
The DIG described the PTI’s actions as challenging the state’s writ, citing instances of vandalism, injuries to police personnel, and aerial firing. He emphasized the lack of approval or NOC for the political rally, asserting that the PTI leadership had engaged in hate speech on social media since January 27, 2024, further aggravating the situation on January 28 with on-ground hate speech against the police.
The clash resulted in injuries to seven policemen, with SHO Mohammed Riaz in serious condition. Official vehicles were vandalized, and the mob allegedly threatened police officers. The case underscores the heightened tensions and confrontations leading to legal consequences amid the political landscape in Karachi.
