Caretaker Government Cancels Privatization of Nandipur and Guddu Power Plants

ISLAMABAD: The caretaker government in Pakistan has taken a significant decision to cancel the privatization of the Nandipur and Guddu power plants.

The government is reportedly considering a proposal to address the outstanding arrears of the two power plants by transferring their ownership to the Pakistan State Oil (PSO).

Privatization

Sources suggest that the government has formally decided to remove Guddu and Nandipur power plants from the privatization list, overturning a decision made by the cabinet committee for privatization in 2018.

The primary motivation behind this move is to settle the outstanding bills owed by the power plants to gas companies. The caretaker government is taking steps to rectify the financial situation and ensure the stability of power generation in the country.

By withdrawing the privatization decision and potentially transferring ownership to the PSO, the government aims to address financial liabilities and maintain operational continuity for these key power facilities.

This decision is part of broader efforts to manage the energy sector efficiently and alleviate financial burdens, reflecting the caretaker government’s commitment to addressing critical issues during its interim tenure.

The proposal to hand over the power plants to the PSO is seen as a strategic move to resolve outstanding financial matters and maintain the plants’ functionality.
