Politicians
LAHORE: In Lahore, something extraordinary happened during elections – three politicians managed to win, even though they were in prison and didn’t actively join the campaigns.
Let’s go back to 1985 when Sheikh Rohail Asghar and his brother Sheikh Shakeel were both in jail during the general elections. Surprisingly, they won the hearts of voters from NA-83 in Lahore without hitting the campaign trail themselves.
Supporters took charge, and Sheikh Rohail secured a big win with 46,646 votes, way more than his opponent’s 19,056 votes. At the same time, his brother Sheikh Shakeel won from PP-98 with 27,831 votes.
In the year 2002, during Musharraf’s time, Makhdum Javaid Hashmi was in prison but still won NA-123 in Lahore. He got about 29,000 votes, surpassing his opponent Tariq Waheed Butt from PPP, who had around 18,000 votes.
Hashmi’s victory showed his popularity, with voters trusting and supporting him even when he was behind bars. This event highlighted that sometimes, people’s faith in a politician can go beyond the usual campaign methods and the challenges of the political situation.
These stories highlight something special: even if politicians are in jail, people still believe in them and vote. It’s a unique win, not about big campaigns but about people’s trust and support.
In these cases, voters showed a strong belief in these politicians, choosing them based on a deeper connection that goes beyond regular election tactics. This special victory, based on genuine support, shows how people’s voices can be powerful even in unusual situations, shaping a political world that values trust more than the usual ways of campaigning.
