Benjamin Netanyahu Concedes Israel Paying a ‘Heavy Price’ in Gaza War

Heavy Price

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledges a “very heavy price” in the ongoing Gaza war, with 14 more soldiers killed, bringing the total to 153 in the ground assault. Despite one of the deadliest days on Saturday, Netanyahu emphasizes the necessity of continued fighting, stating that his forces have “no choice.”

The health ministry in Gaza reports another 166 Palestinian deaths in the last day, bringing the total to over 20,000 since October 7. Netanyahu declares the intention to continue the operation with “full force until the end,” aiming to eliminate Hamas and ensure the safe return of hostages.

He anticipates a prolonged conflict, emphasizing the long-term nature of the war. The Israeli military claims to have killed over 8,000 Palestinian fighters during the campaign. The conflict started after Hamas fighters crossed into southern Israel on October 7, resulting in casualties and hostages.

Israel contends that it takes measures to avoid civilian casualties, blaming Hamas for embedding itself in densely-populated areas. US President Joe Biden emphasizes the “critical need” to protect civilian lives during a call with Netanyahu. The UN Security Council approves a resolution for large-scale aid deliveries to Gaza but stops short of calling for a ceasefire.

Ceasefire negotiations in Egypt propose a three-stage plan, including a two-week humanitarian truce and the release of hostages and prisoners. Israel continues its bombing campaign, ordering civilian evacuations in Gaza, affecting 150,000 people.

The military arrests 700 Palestinian militants during the ground offensive, targeting new Hamas strongholds. Netanyahu denies suggestions that Biden persuaded him against expanding the military operation into Lebanon, citing Israel’s efforts to deter Hezbollah from potential conflict on the northern border.
