Bat Symbol
ISLAMABAD: Despite assurances of a level playing field, PTI faces the upcoming elections without its iconic ‘bat’ symbol, as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) declared its intra-party polls “unconstitutional” and denied the party’s claim to the electoral symbol. The ECP’s verdict, announced following a directive from the Peshawar High Court, marks the second time in less than a month that PTI’s internal elections have been voided.
The ECP stated that PTI failed to comply with directives and conduct intra-party elections in accordance with its constitution, prevailing laws, and election rules. The commission, rejecting Gohar Khan’s certificate and Form-65, declared PTI ineligible to obtain an election symbol under Section 215 of the Elections Act, 2017.
In response, PTI labeled the decision part of the “famous London Plan” and a “disgusting and shameful attempt to stop PTI from [participating in the] election.” The party vowed to appeal the decision at every forum, asserting that its candidates would contest the polls with the ‘bat’ symbol.
PTI’s options include contesting seats as independents if judicial intervention does not secure an election symbol. In this scenario, joining PTI post-election would be challenging, potentially exposing candidates to pressures from other parties.
The Supreme Court emphasized the importance of a level playing field for all parties, including PTI, calling for fair elections that foster healthy competition. The court directed concerned parties to approach the ECP for redressal of grievances related to the elections.
Earlier, the ECP assured PTI of addressing concerns and replacing officials creating obstacles. PTI’s lawyer, Shoaib Shaheen, expressed hope that the ECP would play its role in ensuring free and fair elections, emphasizing the obligation of federal and provincial authorities to assist in the electoral process. The ECP established complaint cells and empowered provincial offices to take immediate action on any reported issues.
