Nawaz Sharif Refutes Allegations of Conspiring Against Former Army Chiefs, Calls for Accountability of ‘Conspirators

LAHORE: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif stated in a meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) parliamentary board in Lahore that he never conspired against retired army and spy chiefs during his time as the country’s premier.

Nawaz Sharif, who recently returned from self-imposed exile in London, expressed his intention to become the prime minister for a record fourth time in the upcoming general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.

The Islamabad High Court overturned his conviction in the Al-Azizia reference a day earlier, after acquitting him in the Avenfield Apartments reference last month.

Nawaz Sharif, addressing the meeting, expressed gratitude for his acquittal in what he referred to as “fake” cases. He called for the disclosure of the names of conspirators, emphasizing that while he had no interest in seeking revenge, those responsible for his ouster should be held accountable.

Reflecting on the recent legal developments, Nawaz Sharif highlighted the lack of substance in the cases against him and criticized the judiciary’s reliance on the “iqama issue” when the Panama case did not yield results. He lamented remarks like “Sicilian mafia, Godfather” made by judges against him and questioned the appropriateness of such comments.

Election Commission of Pakistan to Address Petitions Challenging PTI’s Intra-Party Elections

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) is scheduled to address petitions challenging the intra-party elections of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). A five-member bench will oversee the proceedings, and notices have been issued to Barrister Gohar Khan for the hearing.

Earlier, the Election Commission had directed the PTI to conduct intra-party elections within 20 days, warning that failure to do so could result in the party losing its electoral symbol, the bat.

In response to the directive, the PTI organized the elections, with Imran Khan opting not to contest for the position of chairman. Instead, Barrister Gohar Khan was elected unopposed in his place.
