Israel-Related Issues
Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hulusi Akar, declared that the United States is now isolated on the Gaza issue after vetoing a UN Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire. Akar emphasized that the US finds itself alone in its stance, particularly in the wake of the UN vote.
He disclosed this information during an exclusive interview in the US after meetings in Washington, DC, where he and his counterparts were assigned by a joint Arab-Islamic summit to advocate for a Gaza ceasefire.
The foreign ministers of Turkey, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, and Nigeria were mandated by the summit to take international action to halt the conflict in Gaza and establish lasting peace. Despite the US veto, the contact group, acting as the spokesperson for global public opinion, intends to persist in its efforts for Gaza.
Minister Akar expressed concern over the perceived helplessness of the American political system regarding issues related to Israel. He stated that Israel acts recklessly due to this perceived helplessness. The UN Security Council resolution, put forward by the United Arab Emirates and backed by over 90 member states, faced a US veto, with 13 votes in favor and the UK abstaining.
The contact group plans to continue its work on Gaza without interruption, holding meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Melanie Joly. Following Canada, the group will convene in Norway and later in Geneva.
Minister Akar discussed Turkey’s position on Gaza and the situation in the South Caucasus during bilateral talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Turkey also conveyed its stance on Sweden’s NATO membership and emphasized the importance of normalization between Azerbaijan and Armenia for regional stability. Overall, US stands alone as it blocks UN resolution on Gaza ceasefire, says Turkey’s foreign minister on Israel-related issues.
