ISLAMABAD: Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings introduced a high-budget console game called Last Sentinel on Friday, marking a significant step into the console gaming arena for the renowned mobile gaming company.
During The Game Awards in Los Angeles, the Shenzhen-based company presented a preview of this action role-playing game.
Last Sentinel is currently under development by a team of approximately 200 individuals at Tencentโs Lightspeed LA game studio, a pivotal U.S. studio in Tencentโs global expansion strategy.
Although Tencent hasnโt disclosed the official release date for Last Sentinel, the game promises players the opportunity to combat robots in a dystopian Japan.
In 2020, Tencent recruited industry veteran Steve Martin, known for his involvement in highly successful console games like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, to fortify its position in the console gaming realm.
While Tencent has primarily gained recognition for crafting popular mobile games like PUBG Mobile, where Chinese players traditionally invested more due to their affordability in production, the company is now directing substantial resources toward high-budget console games.
This move aligns with Tencent’s ambition to expand internationally and adapt to evolving preferences among Chinese gamers.
Despite Last Sentinel highlighting Tencentโs internal development capabilities, the company has also secured significant ownership in several prominent game developers worldwide, including a 30% stake in Larian Studios, the creator of Baldurโs Gate 3.
