President Alvi Affirms Willingness to Administer Oath to Nawaz Sharif if Elected Prime Minister

President Dr. Arif Alvi has stated that if Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif becomes the country’s prime minister for the fourth time after the February 8 polls, he will administer the oath.

In an interview with Voice of America (VOA) Urdu, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed president emphasized that administering the oath is part of his responsibilities, and he will fulfill it, stating, “One must do if the public elects someone.”

President Alvi

President Alvi expressed optimism about the timely conduct of general elections on the designated date next year, February 8. He highlighted the agreement among the judiciary, administration, and political leaders on the need for timely elections. He commended the Supreme Court for setting a practical and unanimous election date.

Regarding the idea of a level playing field, President Alvi mentioned that it is the responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the government to provide one. He noted that he drew the government’s attention to address concerns raised by the PTI, and the government assured to provide a level playing field.

President Alvi clarified that he serves as the spokesperson for every Pakistani, not any specific party, and reiterated that the Constitution does not grant the president executive powers to ensure transparent elections. However, he sees it as his duty as the head of state to prompt the executive to carry out its responsibilities transparently.

Responding to a question about the participation of PTI chief Imran Khan in the elections, President Alvi stated that he would not speculate, as it depends on the courts. When asked about his efforts to connect Khan with the military establishment, he cited multiple reasons for the failure of reconciliation between the army and the PTI chairman.

President Alvi declined to comment on whether one particular party is a favorite ahead of the elections, stating that he avoids making such statements to prevent controversy surrounding the president’s position.
