ISLAMABAD: A prominent radio anchor in the Philippines, who was widely recognized as DJ Johnny Walker or Juan Jumalon, tragically lost his life in a fatal shooting while conducting a live broadcast from his home-based studio.
This distressing incident has elicited strong condemnation, including from President Marcos Jr. Shockingly, this marks the fourth journalist killed since Marcos Jr. assumed office in June 2022, according to reports from the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines.
The shocking nature of the attack is exacerbated by the fact that it occurred within Jumalon’s own residence, which also served as his radio station. The unsettling sequence of events unfolded while he was live-streaming on Facebook, with the assailant gaining access to his recording booth by requesting permission to make an “important” on-air announcement.
Local media reports indicate that authorities have promptly secured CCTV footage from the area and initiated investigations into the incident. Jumalon was well-known for his broadcasts, which were regularly featured on the 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM Facebook page, amassing a substantial following of approximately 2,400 followers.
Following the shooting, Jumalon’s wife rushed him to the hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival. It’s worth noting that there were no prior indications of threats against his life.
In response to this tragic incident, President Marcos Jr. has issued directives to the police to conduct a thorough investigation with the goal of swiftly bringing the culprits to justice.
