According to sources, the legal team of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will file a bail petition within the next 48 hours. The petition seeks protective bail for Nawaz Sharif in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references, for which the accountability courts convicted him.
In the Avenfield case, the accountability court sentenced Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison along with an eight-million-pound fine, and in the Al-Azizia reference, he received a seven-year sentence. Furthermore, he was disqualified from holding public office for 10 years.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) dismissed Nawaz Sharif’s appeals against his sentence on June 23, 2021, due to his failure to appear in court.
Earlier, party sources stated that they would file the protective bail petition for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s supreme leader in the IHC by October 16 or 17. They will file the petition in accordance with the IHC’s decision, and it will seek permission for Nawaz Sharif to appear in court.
In a previous ruling on September 29 last year, the IHC granted appeals, acquitting Maryam Nawaz and Captain Safdar and nullifying the sentences imposed by an accountability court in the Avenfield reference. The IHC stated that the sentencing of Maryam Nawaz and Captain Retired Safdar was unjust, and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has failed to prove its case.
