US Secretary of State Visits Israel, Reinforces Support Amidst Gaza Crisis

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has embarked on a visit to Israel to demonstrate steadfast support in the aftermath of violent attacks by Hamas on October 7, which led to a strong Israeli response in the Gaza Strip.

Blinken is en route to Israel to reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the United States to its close ally. This visit coincides with Israel’s robust retaliation against the Gaza Strip following the surge of violence initiated by Hamas.

US Israel

During his visit, Blinken will meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has pledged an uncompromising response to the actions of the militants. Blinken assured reporters before his departure, “The United States has Israel’s back. We have their back today, and tomorrow – we will have it every day. We’re determined to ensure Israel receives all necessary support for its self-defense.”

The mission also aims to focus on securing the release of over 100 captives, including American citizens, as Israel forms an emergency unity government. President Joe Biden reiterated US support in a call with Netanyahu.

The US State Department reports that “at least 22” American citizens have died, with some held by Hamas. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasized Blinken’s support for Israel and efforts to secure the hostages’ release.

Blinken has engaged with counterparts from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, and the UAE, urging regional influence to de-escalate the conflict.

Notably, Blinken’s itinerary does not include the Israeli-occupied West Bank, marking a departure from his previous visits. Israel has tightened its blockade of Gaza, with the possibility of further escalation and a ground offensive, while also blocking food and fuel supplies. Blinken is likely to discuss the idea of providing safe passage for Gaza civilians with his counterparts during the visit.

Countering Hamas

The Biden administration has expressed full support for Israel’s right to respond robustly, departing from the usual calls for restraint during international conflicts. The White House has indicated readiness to send a second US Navy aircraft carrier to the region, alongside the already dispatched one, if necessary.

US officials have underscored that their focus is on countering Hamas, not the Palestinian people, and have welcomed the European Union’s decision to reverse the reduction in development aid for the Palestinians. Meanwhile, Israel has announced the suspension of food, electricity, and water supplies to the Gaza Strip.

Blinken’s itinerary will continue from Israel to Jordan, a close US partner with a peace treaty with Israel, which has historically expressed concern over developments in the Palestinian territories.

The White House has confirmed that 17 Americans are still missing in Israel.

While tensions between the US and Israel have simmered over issues such as judicial reform and the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the current focus is on addressing the ongoing crisis. A wartime emergency government deal has been reached between Netanyahu and opposition leader Benny Gantz.
