Turkey’s government has reported that two terrorists carried out a bomb attack in front of the Interior Ministry buildings in Ankara. Consequently, one of the attackers died in the explosion, while the other was “neutralized” by authorities.
The explosion was heard near the parliament and ministerial buildings, marking the first such incident in Ankara since 2016. Significantly, the blast occurred on the day when parliament was scheduled to open a new session.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that two police officers were slightly injured in the incident. He reported that two terrorists arrived in a light commercial vehicle and carried out the bomb attack. One of them detonated explosives, while the other was “neutralized.”
Despite the lack of specific information about the responsible militant group, authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident as a terrorist attack, with Ankara’s chief prosecutor leading the effort.
Notably, Turkey has experienced violence and attacks attributed to various groups, including Kurdish militants, Islamic State, and others, in recent years.
President Tayyip Erdogan was scheduled to attend the opening of parliament later in the day. As a result, authorities were conducting checks at the parliament following the explosion at the ministry. Consequently, precautions included allowing no cars through the entrance at that time.
