Saudi Arabia and Israel Advancing Toward a ‘Framework’ for a Deal, Says US

Framework for a Deal

The White House announced on Friday that Israel and Saudi Arabia are progressing toward outlining a historic deal brokered by the US to normalize relations after decades of hostility.

President Joe Biden aims to reshape the Middle East and achieve a diplomatic victory in an election year by securing Saudi Arabia’s recognition of the Jewish state, which is the guardian of Islam’s two holiest sites.

Moreover, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby informed reporters that all parties involved have established a fundamental framework for potential progress. However, he emphasized that, like any intricate arrangement, compromises and actions would be required from everyone.

The United States has been encouraging its Middle East allies, Israel and Saudi Arabia, to normalize their diplomatic relations, building on similar agreements involving the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco.

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince and de facto ruler, Mohammed bin Salman, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have both recently indicated that the two countries are moving closer to such normalization.

Saudi Arabia has been pursuing security guarantees, including a reported treaty, from the United States in exchange for normalizing relations with Israel.

While seeking to normalize relations, the Palestinians have stressed the importance of considering their interests in any deal. Also, they argue that a two-state solution is essential for peace in the Middle East. Overall, the White House announced on Friday that Israel and Saudi Arabia are progressing toward a framework for a historic US-brokered deal to normalize relations after decades of hostility.
