A devastating fire broke out at a wedding celebration in Iraq’s Nineveh province, resulting in the tragic loss of more than 100 lives and leaving around 150 individuals injured.
The incident occurred in the Hamdaniya district, where civil defense teams worked tirelessly into the early hours of Wednesday to search for survivors amidst the charred remains of the building.
Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq confirmed that the death toll had reached 113, while state media initially reported at least 100 casualties, with 150 people sustaining injuries.
Local civil defense authorities reported that fireworks ignited during the festive occasion caused the fire to engulf a large events hall in the northeast region.
Witnesses described a harrowing scene, with flames pulsating from the hall, leaving those inside with limited means of escape. Some individuals managed to evacuate, but others were tragically trapped or left with injuries.
The incident marks a heartbreaking tragedy for the community and the nation as a whole, as the search for answers and recovery efforts continue.
