PTI and PPP Seek Clear Election Date Confirmation

Election Date Confirmation

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) urged the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to promptly announce the exact date for the upcoming general elections.

PPP demanded a level playing field for all political parties and called on the ECP to adhere to the Constitution while announcing the date and election schedule. PTI emphasized that the ECP should fulfill its constitutional role by ensuring elections occur within the constitutionally mandated 90-day period.

The ECP recently announced that elections would take place in the last week of January after the completion of the delimitation process by November 30. However, the exact election date was not disclosed, leading to speculation.

A PTI spokesperson criticized the ECP for avoiding the announcement of a specific poll date due to technical reasons and urged the electoral body to stay aligned with the Constitution. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of the ECP’s duty to conduct fair and transparent elections within the constitutionally defined framework.

The PTI spokesperson accused the ECP of neglecting its duty to ensure voting rights for 240 million citizens within the constitutionally defined timeframe, describing it as “criminal negligence.”

PPP Secretary General Nayyar Hussain Bukhari called on the ECP to provide the date and schedule while urging the interim government to assist in conducting free, fair, and transparent elections.

Bukhari noted that the PPP had cooperated with rivals and signed the Charter of Democracy with the PML-N.

He also mentioned the PPP’s stance against groups it considered enemies of the state and state institutions, alluding to the PTI and the May 9 incidents. Overall, PPP and PTI called on the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for prompt election date confirmation.
