China becomes first country to make an ambassadorial appointment to Afghanistan since Taliban takeover

A new Chinese ambassador has presented his credentials to the Taliban’s prime minister in Kabul, marking the first appointment of a foreign envoy at the ambassadorial level since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021. It’s important to note that no foreign government has officially recognized the Taliban. The appointment of the new Chinese ambassador raises questions about whether Beijing is moving towards formal recognition of the Taliban, although there has been no official confirmation of such recognition from China.

The ceremony took place with the Taliban’s Prime Minister, Mohammad Hassan Akhund, accepting the credentials of Mr. Zhao Xing, the new Chinese ambassador to Afghanistan. China’s foreign ministry has not yet provided an official statement or comment regarding this development.

Previously, China’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Wang Yu, served in the role from 2019 and completed his tenure last month. Other nations and international delegations have sent senior diplomats to lead diplomatic missions in Kabul, but they have typically held the title of “chargé d’affaires,” which implies responsibility for ambassadorial duties without formally holding the ambassador position.

Since the Taliban’s takeover of Kabul on August 15, 2021, following the withdrawal of foreign forces and the departure of US-backed President Ashraf Ghani, Afghanistan’s diplomatic landscape has seen significant changes. The status of diplomatic recognition for the Taliban-led government remains a complex and evolving issue in international diplomacy.
