Frustrated by spammy DMs from strangers? Instagram has your back

ISLAMABAD: Instagram, owned by Meta, tackles unsolicited DMs with new update to reduce spam and messages from strangers.

Instagram, owned by Meta, has introduced a new update to tackle unsolicited and spammy DMs from strangers. The photo and video-sharing application is now taking measures to reduce unwanted message requests from people you don’t follow. This update aims to improve the overall user experience and make the platform safer for everyone.

In June, the app conducted a test, and now it has implemented a new restriction for DM’ers not on your following list. They are now limited to sending just one message invite before they can start chatting with you.

Furthermore, the message can now only include text, and the new restrictions no longer allow unsolicited photos, videos, or voice messages in message requests.

Previously, users could send an unlimited number of message requests, which led to potential spam issues. With this latest update, users can send more than one message only after you have accepted their request to connect.

The Requests button above the inbox in the application’s DM tab is where you can find these message requests. Instagram users can receive requests only if their privacy settings require others to send a request before messaging them. This feature gives users more control over who can initiate conversations with them and helps reduce unwanted messages.

Instagram’s Ongoing Efforts to Create a Safer and Controlled Inbox Experience

Cindy Southworth, Meta’s head of women’s safety, said,“We want people to feel confident and in control when they open their inbox.”

She further added that the company is testing new features, which means “people can’t receive images, videos or multiple messages from someone they don’t follow, until they’ve accepted the request to chat.”

In addition to enhancing messaging safeguards on Instagram, Meta has introduced more comprehensive parental controls for both Instagram and Messenger. These controls provide parents with a better understanding of their child’s activities on the apps, empowering them to monitor and manage their child’s online experiences effectively.

The company emphasized its commitment to creating a safer and more secure environment for its users. They are actively working on implementing measures and improvements to achieve this goal.
