WASHINGTON: The United States has announced a military aid package worth $345 million for Taiwan. The increased support for the self-governing island that China also claims signals a significant development. The aid package will encompass various aspects, including the provision of “defense articles,” military education, and training.
The announcement was made by the administration of US President Joe Biden in a statement. The released announcement did not specify the exact weapons or equipment to be provided. However, media outlets mentioned that the supplies could include portable air defense systems, small arms munitions, and reconnaissance equipment.
In response to the announcement, Beijing swiftly expressed its disapproval. China has maintained its claim over Taiwan. The country has threatened to use force if necessary to reunify the island with the Chinese mainland.
The US does not formally recognize Taiwan, but it has shown support for the self-governing island by assisting in its defense. Taiwan has sought to bolster its defense capabilities in the face of China’s increasing assertiveness. It is evident in frequent incursions of warplanes and naval vessels near Taiwanese territory.
While the US adheres to the “One China” policy and does not support Taiwanese independence officially, it is required by US law to support the island’s defense. As tensions between the US and China grow, Washington has approved significant military aid for Taiwan, including deals for F-16 fighter jets.
The latest military aid package comes after the US Congress granted President Biden the authority to provide aid for Taiwan by drawing from American military stocks. This method expedites the delivery of equipment, similar to the assistance provided to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion.
