IBA Karachi launches report on ‘The State of Pakistan’s Economy 2023-24’

KARACHI: The Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Karachi has launched its comprehensive report titled “The State of Pakistan’s Economy 2023-24 | Trials and Turmoil: Navigating the Interconnected Challenges of Politics, Economy, and Climate Change.” Esteemed faculty members from the Department of Economics authored it. The report provides critical analysis and recommendations for sustainable economic growth.

The report focuses on three key challenges: political situation, economic challenges, and climate change. Through extensive research, it offers policy recommendations to address these interconnected challenges. It aims to guide policymakers, academia, and the government in improving Pakistan’s economy by fostering increased exports, resolving energy sector issues, and building resilient communities against floods.

A panel discussion was held during the report launch, featuring experts such as Dr. Nooreen Mujahid from AERC, University of Karachi; Dr. Ali Hasanain from LUMS; and Mr. Ammar Habib Khan, CEO of CreditBook Financial Services. The discussion provided insights into the report’s findings and recommendations. Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director of IBA, and Dr. Syed Jaffar Ahmed, Member of the Board of Governors (BOG), IBA, were also present.

Dr. Mujahid highlighted the report’s timeliness and actionable recommendations. She emphasized the role of provinces in improving energy strategies and generating regional and national benefits. Dr. Hasanain discussed the relationship between taxation and economic development, emphasizing the need for political solutions and provincial responsibility. Mr. Khan emphasized strategic measures to strengthen the energy sector and enhance exports.

In closing, Dr. Zaidi expressed gratitude to the panelists and urged a reassessment of old patterns. The event concluded with a Q&A session and mementos presented to the panelists.

The report serves as a valuable resource for policymakers, academia, and the government. It provides insights into Pakistan’s economy and offers recommendations for sustainable growth.
