During the ASEAN meetings in Jakarta, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, emphasized the necessity of stabilizing bilateral ties with India. Meanwhile, India and China sought ways to alleviate military tensions along their extensive border.
Wang conveyed to Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar that mutual support should replace suspicion, as stated in the readout from the Chinese foreign ministry.
The India-China border spans 3,800 kilometers (2,360 miles), with much of it inadequately marked. It was the site of a brief yet violent war in 1962. However, since the 1990s, relations have improved through a series of border agreements. Today China is becoming India’s second-largest trading partner.
In 2020, a border clash resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers. It prompted both countries to reinforce their positions and deploy additional troops and equipment.
Through several rounds of military and diplomatic discussions, tensions have been somewhat alleviated, although New Delhi describes the border situation as fragile and perilous.
During their meeting, Wang stressed the importance of China and India working together to find a mutually acceptable resolution to the border issues. He emphasized the need for support and collaboration rather than mutual suspicion or attrition.
He further emphasized that the overall relationship between the two countries should not be defined solely by specific issues or conflicts.
Both sides agreed to schedule the next round of talks between military commanders on border matters at the earliest opportunity, as stated by the Chinese foreign ministry.
Since 2020, India has taken measures to scrutinize Chinese businesses. It includes banning over 300 Chinese apps such as TikTok, as well as increasing scrutiny of Chinese investments.
Regarding India’s recent restrictions on Chinese companies, Wang urged for a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese firms.
