Real-world study in Israel shows Pfizer vaccine’s efficacy to be 94%

A study on 1.2 million people, in Israel of the Pfizer vaccine, showed it to be 94% effective against Covi-19. This study reaffirms the faith in the mass immunization campaigns to curb Coronavirus.

Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Israeli study reveals there is likely a strong protective benefit against infection, a crucial element in breaking onward transmission.

Ben Reis, a researcher at Harvard Medical School and one of the paper’s authors, told AFP,

“This is the first peer-reviewed large scale evidence for the effectiveness of a vaccine in real world conditions.”

The study included 600,000 people who received the jabs and who were later compared with the same amount of people who had not been vaccinated having almost the same demographic profiles.

The efficacy against the symptomatic coronavirus was 94% which was close to 95% results came in the last clinical trials.

More than 217 million vaccine doses have been administered globally, according to an AFP tally Wednesday, though the vast majority have been given in high-income countries.

Hopes are high that the inoculations will allow the world to finally emerge from a pandemic that has killed more than 2.4 million, infected 112 million, and hammered the global economy.

However, the experts warned unless the whole world availed the vaccine, the pandemic will not end.
