CJP takes suo motu notice on delay in Punjab, KP elections

ISLAMABAD: In response to an apparent delay in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) elections, Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial took a suo motu notice on Wednesday and constituted a larger bench to hear the case.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan has constituted a nine-member bench to hear the suo motu case tomorrow (Thursday) at 2 p.m.
The 9-member bench will be headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, comprising Justices Ijazul Ahsan, Mansoor Ali Shah, Muneeb Akhtar, Yahya Afridi, Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, Jamal Mandokhel, Muhammad Ali Mazhar, and Athar Minallah.
In Thursday’s hearing, the Supreme Court’s bench will take up hearing three different aspects of the case.
The questions are: who is responsible for announcing an election date when a provincial legislature is devolved?
The court will be asked two further questions, including when and how to exercise the constitutional right to set a date for elections. Moreover, what is expected of the federation and the provinces in terms of general elections.
