UK to investigate allegedly embezzled £302m aid to Pakistan

An inquiry has been relaunched by the International Development Committee (IDC) of the British parliament regarding an aid package worth GBP 302 million that was awarded to Pakistan by the United Kingdom.

This inquiry committee is selected from parliamentarians that consist of MPs from various parties.

This case came under focus when in 2019, Dailymail published an article accusing millions of UK taxpayers’ money to be stolen by former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif. However, these allegations were rubbished by Shahbaz Sharif as baseless.

Pakistan has historically been part of the Department for International Development (DFID) for the past five years and received approximately GBP 302 million in 2019/20.

The British MPs have asked for submitting a report to assess the impact of this aid to Pakistan by April 1.

The MPs will then go over the assessment to evaluate whether the goals have been met and the targets that have been assigned in association with this program are being taken seriously.

This inquiry was previously launched in June 2019 however, no oral evidence was taken in which led to it dissolving.
