Man arrested after uranium found at UK’s Heathrow Airport

On Sunday, the UK Metropolitan Police arrested a man in his 60s in connection with an investigation into the discovery of uranium traces in a cargo package at London’s Heathrow Airport.

The man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of terrorism-related offences and later released on bail while police conducted their investigation, according to police.

A package delivered to Heathrow Airport on December 29 contained a trace amount of uranium.

Despite the arrest, the incident “does not appear to be linked to any direct threat to the public,” according to Richard Smith, head of London Police’s Counter-Terrorism Command.

When police arrived at a Cheshire residence, they transported the man to a police station in northwest England. He was later granted bail and released until April.

Uranium is a key component in nuclear weapons, but it can also be used for scientific research and the generation of electricity for domestic use.

Aside from being toxic if ingested or inhaled, some isotopes of that metal emit radiation that may be harmful to humans.
