Senior parliamentarian Najma Hameed dies at 78

Begum Najma Hameed, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior parliamentarian passed away in Rawalpindi’s Holy Family Hospital after a protracted illness.

She passed away at the age of 78, leaving behind three sons.

On Saturday, her funeral is anticipated to take place in Rawalpindi.

Begum Najma Hameed was the sister of PML-N leader Tahira Aurangzeb and the aunt of Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

Begum Najma Hameed served as the PML-supreme N’s leader and the public face of the organisation in Rawalpindi. She had been elected as a senator twice and served as the president of the PML-N Women’s Wing.

Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the PML-N, and his wife Kulsoom Nawaz were close friends of hers (late). She was also crucial to the political campaign of the Kulsoom Nawaz-led party.

The residence in Satellite Town where Kulsoom was kept when she was under house arrest in Rawalpindi belonged to Najma Hameed.

Begum Najma Hameed, Begum Ra’ana Liaqat Ali Khan, and Begum Feroz Khan Noon all worked for the Muslim League in various capacities. They were all born in Multan on March 18, 1944.

She gave the Muslim League her entire life’s work.

The hub of political activity had always been Begum Najma Hameed’s home. She was regarded as a fearless and perceptive political figure.
