SC releases convict in Musharraf attack case

ISLAMABAD: A man accused of attacking former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf has been cleared by the Supreme Court.

The appeals against the acquittal of suspect Rana Tanvir filed by the federal and Punjab governments were denied by a three-member bench chaired by Justice Sardar Tariq Masood.

Hashmat Habib, Tanvir’s attorney, informed the court that the prisoner had not been released despite serving his life sentence.

The duration of a life sentence is 14 years, but the attorney continued, “My client has been in prison for 20 years.”

According to the government’s attorney, Tanvir was under “solid evidence.” He claimed that the high court had not fairly considered all of the available evidence.

The court chose to exonerate Tanvir after hearing arguments from both sides.

Tanvir was given a life sentence by the supreme court in 2005. Due to his involvement in the attack on Musharraf’s motorcade in Rawalpindi on December 31, 2003, he was taken into custody.

Despite serving out his sentence, the jail officials refused to let him go.

The Supreme Court rejected the appeals from the Punjab and Federal governments and upheld the release decision made by the High Court.
