Nick Jonas opens up about his symptoms of type 1 diabetes

Singer Nick Jonas shared the four symptoms his body started to show before he was given a type 1 diabetes diagnosis in 2005 at the age of 13.

The 30-year-old shared on Instagram that he had type 1 diabetes, which he claimed was characterised by excessive thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and irritability.

“I noticed four symptoms of type 1 diabetes: irritability, frequent urination, weight loss, and excessive thirst. These are recognisable as typical type 1 diabetes symptoms. I’m sharing my signs with you so you can #SeeTheSigns, he wrote in the post’s caption.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), type 1 diabetes is believed to be brought on by an autoimmune reaction, in which the body unintentionally attacks itself and prevents the body from producing insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is caused by relative insulin deficiency and insulin resistance, which can be treated with tablets initially and then insulin.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by an absolute lack of insulin and requires insulin as treatment from the beginning. Type 1 diabetes affects 5 to 10% of the population.

An estimated 8.4 million people worldwide will have type 1 diabetes in 2021, according to a study that was published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology. By 2040, this figure is expected to rise to 13.5–17.4 million.

The study also listed the ten nations with the highest estimated prevalence of type 1 diabetes, which account for 5.08 million or 60% of all cases worldwide: the United States, India, Brazil, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Spain.

Type 1 diabetes symptoms frequently appear suddenly, it is typically diagnosed in kids, teens, and young adults.

Excessive thirst and frequent urination are osmotic symptoms caused by high blood sugar levels, which dehydrate cells and result in increased fluid intake and frequent urination, among other symptoms.
