Pakistan defeated Bangladesh by five wickets to advance to the T20 World Cup semifinals.
As a result of South Africa’s loss to Netherlands, the match between the two teams was effectively a quarterfinal.
Prior to the critical T20 World Cup 2022 match on Sunday, Bangladesh had set Pakistan a target of 128 runs.
With a spot in the semi-finals on the line on Sunday, Pakistan limited Bangladesh to a modest total thanks to fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi’s four wickets.
India, who qualified after the Netherlands shocked South Africa, and the winner of the Super 12 match in Adelaide will both advance from Group 2.
After Bangladesh decided to bat first, Shaheen, who produced his T20 best figures of 4-22, struck early for Pakistan when the left-arm quick sent back Liton Das for 10.
Das looked dangerous with a six off Shaheen in a close loss to India at the Adelaide Oval, but three balls later he handed out a catch at gully. Das had given India a worry with his 27-ball 60.
When the always cautious Shadab Khan dropped the left-handed batsman on 11 at short extra, Najmul Hossain Shanto profited from the reprieve. A total of 54 were scored in the opening round.
Together with Soumya Sarkar, who started out aggressively, Shanto scored 52 runs.
Before attempting a reverse paddle sweep against Shadab, who struck, Soumya scored 20 off 17 runs.
The third umpire confirmed the on-field ruling despite Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, reviewing the decision and claiming that the ball had had just skimmed the bat before hitting the pad.
Shakib waved his hands and appeared to be in shock, refusing to go.
Afif Hossain prevented a Shadab hat-trick.
The Bangladesh batsmen appeared to be affected by Shakib’s wicket as they became abruptly agitated.
Shanto was dismissed by off-spinner Iftikhar Ahmed shortly after reaching his second T20 fifty.
Shaheen struck twice in one over and then picked a fourth for the first time in his T20 career as Bangladesh lost regular wickets.
Afif Hossain had a perfect 24-hit game.
