Britain’s Prince William announces £1m Earthshot Prize finalists

There are 15 finalists competing for a £1 million environmental award established by the Prince of Wales, and among them are the creators of a bubble pump that collects plastic before it reaches the ocean.

The Earthshot Prize is given to creative environmental ideas.

The five finalists for Prince William of Britain’s Earth shot Prize, which awards 1 million pounds ($1.12 million) to each winner who develops a solution to a significant environmental issue, were announced on Friday.

The 15 finalists in five categories include everything from an Amsterdam recycling programme to a Kenyan startup producing cleaner-burning stoves. There were over a thousand nominations for the award.

The finalists, according to William, are focusing their time, effort, and talent on innovative solutions that have the potential to not only address the most pressing environmental problems facing the planet but also build communities that are healthier, more prosperous, and more sustainable for future generations.

The prize was established in 2020 by William, who succeeded Queen Elizabeth as heir to the British throne in September. It was named after John F. Kennedy’s ambitious “moonshot” project and his goal for the 1969 moon landings.

The other prize finalists are a Chinese team attempting to turn the arid desert into fertile soil, an Indian company producing a sustainable substitute for leather from used flowers, and an Omani initiative removing carbon dioxide by turning it into rock.

On December 2, the awards ceremony will be held in Boston.
