Boris Johnson excitedly announced an amazing achievement on Twitter about giving 400,000 vaccinations across the UK in a single day.
He said, โYesterday alone we gave 400,000 vaccinations – an amazing achievement, and I want to thank everyone involved.โ
5.4 million people across the UK have received their first COVID vaccine dose. That amounts to about 8 percent of the population.
Britain has been reporting alarming coronavirus death numbers for weeks with hospitals continuing to fill up.
On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at a news conference that the new variant may also be more deadly with a comparatively higher chance of death. He further acknowledged that it is too early to be sure since his scientific advisers urged restraint in interpreting preliminary evidence.
โThe data indicating an increase in the risk of death in those infected with the new variant are preliminary and based on small numbers.โ
The governmentโs chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, said.
โThat evidence is not yet strong, itโs a series of different bits of information that come together to support that,โ Mr. Vallance said.
โItโs largely the impact of this new variant that means the N.H.S. is under such intense pressure.โ
While referring to UKโs overstretched National Health Service, Mr. Johnson said.
United States has been able to vaccinate 4.5% of its population, whereas most European countries have vaccinated less than 2 percent of its population.
The second injection have been given to fewer than 500,000 people in UK. Englandโs chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, said the first shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Astra Zeneca vaccines gave a โgreat majority of the protection.โ
ย โWe will have to live with the coronavirus, one way or another, for a long time to come.โ
Mr. Johnson said in the news conference.
According to the British news report, the government administration is considering offering people ยฃ500 (about $680) to anyone testing positive for Coronavirus to encourage staying in quarantine for the full 10 days, which does not prevail currently.
