Mahsa Amini, a young woman who passed away while in the care of the Iranian morality police, is the subject of protests that are sweeping Iran, and more and more people are showing their support for the cause. People, particularly French actors, Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra, and Israeli women, are not in favour of those who remain mute in the face of persecution at the hands of their own government and show support right now.
The Iranian government is being protested over forcibly forcing women to cover their heads and using violence against them when they defy the arbitrary clothing restrictions. Many Iranian women are shaving off their hair as a gesture of protest, which has prompted celebrities to shave off a lock of hair in public or to post about the demonstrations. People quickly pointed out that Chopra has never spoken against the oppression of Muslim women in India and India-occupied Jammu & Kashmir, despite the fact that she posted a picture and post about the cause.
She posted a photo on Instagram on Monday along with some commentary about Iranian women. “The voices that speak after long periods of quiet under duress will deservedly erupt like a volcano! And they will not and MUST not be stopped,” she added, expressing her admiration for the bravery and determination of all involved.
Chopra received criticism on social media shortly after her Instagram post for failing to speak up for the Muslim women living in her own nation. One commenter said that Muslim women are struggling for their right to wear hijabs in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, where Chopra hails from.
Chopra isn’t the only one, though. People are criticising Indian TV hosts who cut their hair in support of Iranian women.
Journalists are challenging the hypocrisy of celebrities who are silent when women in India are denied the right to wear the hijab but who defend Iranian women’s decision to not do so.
A journalist exposed Indian celebrities for “speaking about Iran” while ignoring “fascist and apartheid” occurring in their own nation by sharing a video of BJP MP Parvesh Verma.
Chopra, who serves as a National Ambassador for UNICEF India, has never defended the rights of Muslim women in Palestine, IoJK, or even India. When she can’t even speak out for women in her own nation, her post on behalf of Iranian women comes across as hollow.
