For tax evasion, Shakira may spend eight years in prison

Following a court decision requiring Shakira to stand trial for a $21.5 million tax scam, she might spend eight years in prison.

Authorities stated that the Hips Don’t Lie singer may go to jail after rejecting a plea agreement in July over allegations of tax cheating.

The trial’s date has not yet been made public.

“Shakira has always cooperated and abided by the law, demonstrating impeccable conduct as an individual and a taxpayer, and faithfully following the counsel of PriceWaterhouse Coopers, a prestigious and internationally renowned tax firm,” a representative for the singer said in a statement when the case first made headlines.

“Unfortunately, the Spanish Tax Office continues to violate her rights and pursue yet another pointless action despite losing one out of every two disputes with its taxpayers.

“Shakira is convinced that by the conclusion of the legal process, her innocence will be established.”
