According to officials, Russia launched a barrage of missiles at Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, during the night, hitting a train yard and cutting power to more than 18,000 homes.
Oleg Synegubov, the governor of Kharkiv, reported that Russian forces had launched S-300 missiles, which were originally intended as anti-aircraft weapons but are now frequently converted to target civilian targets in Ukrainian cities.
The explosions, which were heard in the city center at around 9:00 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Tuesday, wrecked an electrical transformer and struck a workshop, according to the Kharkiv regional emergency service.
Residents of these districts of Kharkiv woke up to a power outage and commuter trams stranded without power in the streets.
Firefighters were putting out a fire at the railway yard that had been started by at least two strikes that had also damaged two parked wagons, destroyed an office, and tore up some lines.
