Tuesday, a local court in Islamabad released renowned journalist Ayaz Amir from the case of Sarah Inam’s murder. Sarah Inam was Ayaz Amir’s daughter-in-law.
After a disagreement over a “family matter” on September 23, Sarah Inam’s husband Shah Nawaz—the son of Ayaz Amir—is accused of killing her at home.
Later, after finding her death in a farmhouse in Islamabad’s Chak Shahzad neighbourhood, the officers arrested Shah Nawaz as a suspect in the crime. Later, he acknowledged killing her. Just three months had passed since the couple’s wedding.
Ayaz Amir and his ex-wife Sameena Shah were named as suspects by Sarah’s family, and on Saturday a trial judge granted the arrest warrants for the two. Amir was taken into custody, but his ex-wife later received pre-arrest bail.
Ayaz Amir was however brought before the court during today’s hearing after his one-day physical remand was over.
Soon after, the police asked the judge to extend Ayaz’s physical detention by five days so they could continue questioning him.
Ayaz Amir’s attorney continued to argue that his client shouldn’t be included in the case because he had no connection to it.
According to Ayaz Amir’s legal representative, Ayaz Amir was in Chakwal at the time of the murder and told the police about it as soon as he learned about it.
