Roger Federer announces retirement after final appearance at the Laver Cup this week

Following a string of injuries, Roger Federer declared on Wednesday that he “stopped believing” he could play another match. A last participation at the Laver Cup in London this week would be the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s last in competitive tennis, he said last Thursday.

Federer last competed on the tour at Wimbledon in 2021, and following the match, he underwent knee surgery for the third time. The 41-year-old Swiss star said on BBC television, “The last three years have been difficult, to say the least.

Federer, whose last Grand Slam triumph came at the 2018 Australian Open, continued, “I knew I was on really thin ice for the last year ever since I played Wimbledon.” “I attempted to return, but I was only able to do so much. To be completely honest, I stopped believing in it.

Federer had intended to resume playing regularly in 2022, but a recent scan was “not what I was hoping for,” he stated.”We realized this was it very immediately. What to announce and when to announce then becomes the question.

It’s taken him a few hard weeks to go over the phrases and make sure they accurately express how he was feeling while also appreciating everyone who had offered assistance. Federer will have one more opportunity to compete as one of the “Big Four” of the tennis “Big Four” at the Laver Cup team event in London starting on Friday.
