Bombs explode Donetsk, controlled by separatists

According to the mayor of the Russian-backed city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, thirteen people have been killed and dozens wounded in a series of explosions.

The “punitive” shelling by the Ukrainians was responsible for the killings, according to Alexei Kulemzin. The Ukrainian authorities have made no public statements.

Russia’s proxies have ruled Donetsk since 2014. They have claimed that the city has been under constant attack by Ukrainian forces.

However, independent confirmation is difficult to obtain in the eastern regions currently controlled by separatists. According to local authorities, nine 150mm shells were allegedly fired at the Kuibyshevsky neighborhood by a village to the west of Donetsk.

Denis Pushilin, the leader of the area, claimed that a bus station, a store, and a bank were all intentionally bombed by the Ukrainian government.

The Ukrainian army has been pushed back from the city’s boundaries, but Russian forces have been able to gain territory further south in the Donetsk region since the assault began in February.
