On Thursday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) heard Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s petition to find out where other political parties get their money. The respondents asked for more time, so the commission said that the next hearing would be the last chance for people to make their case.
The lawyer for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan said that their case application was turned down, so they needed more time to send in their response. In the same way, the lawyer for the Awami National Party (ANP) said that their senior lawyer was too busy to come to the hearing, so they also needed more time.
The member of the commission told the lawyers that it wasn’t right for them to take money from their clients and then say at the hearing that they weren’t senior lawyers.
PTI argued against the requests for more time, saying that the case had already taken too long.
Their lawyer said that every time they come to the ECP, they ask for more time off. He also said that the respondents had turned the ECP into a civil court.
PTI also asked that the scrutiny committee be given the job of finding out where the money for political parties comes from.
The member said that the political parties should send in their responses. He or she also said that the final arguments would be made at the next hearing, and the case would not be put off any longer.
The member also said that anyone who wanted to respond should do so at the next hearing. If they didn’t, the decision would be made.
The case was then put off until October 3.
