A former Test cricketer, Sadiq Mohammad, has urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to replace chief selector Mohammad Waseem after the team’s disappointing performance at the just concluded Asia Cup 2022, in which they were defeated in the final by Sri Lanka.
Sadiq told The News that “it’s the proper time to overhaul this selection committee, notably Mohammad Waseem,” because “they have failed” to form a strong T20 team.
Concerned about Pakistan’s lack of batting discipline, Sadiq claimed that aside from captain Babar Azam and wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan, the rest of the team consisted of nothing but sloggers.
Sadiq Mohammad, a left-handed opener, represented Pakistan in 41 Tests and 19 One-Day Internationals.
The head selector seems to have a soft spot for Asif and Iftikhar. Though they haven’t performed well, they continue to be included on the team’s roster for away tours. Sadiq stated, “I think they should be resting for good,” casting doubt on the validity of the decision-making process.
“These two batsmen are of club standard and they should not be selected even for the domestic regional teams,” Sadiq remarked. “It will deny the up-and-coming deserving youths [of being selected].
Tactical batting “as Mohammad Yousuf, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, and Asif Iqbal used to do,” he claimed, can help Pakistan reach its goals.
